February - Theresa Meyers - Shattering the Mirror of Your Character: How To Use Back Story Effectively

Always a lover of books and stories, Theresa’s career began writing for newspapers, then moving to freelance for national magazines before selling her first full length work of fiction. She started her first novel in high school, eventually enrolled in a Writer’s Digest course then put the book under the bed until she joined Romance Writers of America in 1993. In 2005 she was selected as one of the eleven finalists in the nation for the American Title II contest, which is the American Idol of books, for her Scottish historical, The Spellbound Bride. She writes for both Harlequin Nocturne and Diversion Books. For information on her latest releases, find her online or on Facebook at Theresa Meyers author.

Program:

Theresa will share tips and tricks for making your characters three dimensional. Discover when and how to use back story to improve pacing and other aspects of your book. Learn techniques for interweaving back story with action, inner thought, and dialog and understand why back story is better in small bits and large chunks. Learn now to pick out what matters and what doesn’t in your character’s history and find ways to make your characters’ actions and reactions match with their back story.

Special Events

Annual 3-Page Read: A favorite of SVR members, this annual tradition is where SVR members may submit the first 3 pages of a WIP (work in progress) for a group (positive!) critique.

Three-Day Retreat: This event began nearly 6 years ago and has become one of the most anticipated events every other year.
